What are Stocks?
Stocks represent partial ownership of a company. There are two (2) ways to make money through stock ownership. One would be to "buy low and sell high," also called stock appreciation. The other is through the payment of dividends. A dividend is issued when a company pays a portion of its earnings to shareholders, but not all stocks offer dividend payments.
Pros
- Could mean a higher rate of return
Cons
- Is a higher risk investment
All stock offerings are subject to change in price and availability. The information presented is sourced from both internal and external providers believed to be reliable; however, accuracy cannot be guaranteed. The return and principal value of stocks fluctuate with changes in market conditions. Shares when sold may be worth more or less than their original cost.
What are Bonds?
Bonds are issued by governments, companies, and other entities. It can be thought of as a loan and are issued for a specific period of time. When issued, the value is also called face value. Regular interest payments are made to the investor called coupon. After the bond has matured the issuer repays the face value back to the investor.
Pros
- Is a lower risk investment
Cons
- Investor could default on repaying the bond
- Typically has a lower rate of return
All bond offerings are subject to change in price and availability. Information is obtained from internal and external sources believed to be reliable; however, accuracy cannot be guaranteed. Bond prices and yields may fluctuate with market conditions, and the value of a bond may be higher or lower if sold before maturity. Quoted yields reflect the lower of yield to maturity or yield to call, as applicable.
What are Mutual Funds?
Mutual funds are made up of a group of investors who come together to buy various investments, including stocks and bonds. This means the risk and gains are shared by a larger amount of people. Mutual funds are one way to diversify your investments. Mutual funds can carry different levels of risk, so they can still be individualized. Mutual funds may come with fees and charges along with a minimum investment amount. A diversified portfolio does not ensure a profit or protect against loss in a declining market.
Pros
- Diversified Portfolio
- Risk is Shared
- Variety of Mutual Funds Options Available
Cons
- Possible Fees for Investment Manager
- Minimum Investment Amount
Investing in mutual funds is subject to risk and loss of principal. There is no assurance or certainty that any investment strategy will be successful in meeting its objectives.
Investors should consider the investment objectives, risks and charges and expenses of the funds carefully before investing. The prospectus contains this and other information about the funds. Contact Cheryl Steiner, VP Investment Advisor Representative, at cheryl.steiner@ceterais.com, call 330.674.2397, or visit 91 S. Clay St., Millersburg, OH 44654 to obtain a prospectus, which should be read carefully before investing or sending money.
What are Money Market Funds?
Money Market Funds are lower risk investments and are typically invested in things like treasury bills and other stable instruments. Money markets are short term liquid investments. These investments may come with fees and usually have a minimum balance needed to open and maintain the account.
Pros
- Lower Risk Investment Option
- Short Term Investing
Cons
- Lower Return on Investment
- Minimum Balance
- Possible Fees
Money market funds are offered by prospectus only. The prospectus contains important information, including investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses, which investors should consider carefully before investing. A prospectus is available from your Investment Executive. Please read it carefully before investing or sending money. An investment in the fund is neither insured nor guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any other government agency. Although the fund seeks to preserve your $1.00 per share, it is possible to lose money in the fund.
What are Annuities?
Annuities are financial instruments issued by life insurance companies and are tax-deferred similarly to a 401k or IRA. There are different types of annuities including fixed and variable annuities and may have fees associated with them.
Pros
- Annuities are Tax-Deferred
- Can be used as another option for lower risk investment in a retirement portfolio
- Additional features through riders for long term care or income
Cons
- Many annuities have a surrender charge associated with them. To counter act they may also have a free withdrawal percentage that can be taken each year without having to pay the surrender charge
- IRS penalty on withdrawals before 59 1/2 - this is because it is a retirement instrument
- Some annuities have fees associated with them
Variable annuities are offered by prospectus only. The prospectus contains important information, including investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses, which investors should consider carefully before investing. A prospectus is available from your Investment Executive. Please read it carefully before investing or sending money.
Variable annuities are long-term investment vehicles designed for retirement purposes. They involve investment risk, including possible loss of principal, and may be subject to fees.
What does Tax-Deferred mean?
Tax-deferred means you postpone paying taxes on earnings, such as interest, dividends, or capital gains, until a later date, typically when you withdraw the money. This feature is common in retirement accounts and certain investment products like IRAs, 401(k)s, annuities, and some insurance policies.
By deferring taxes, your investment has the potential to grow faster because earnings can compound without being reduced by taxes each year. However, when you do make withdrawals, the amounts are generally subject to ordinary income tax.
Investments are: *Not FDIC/NCUSIF insured *May lose value *Not financial institution guaranteed *Not a deposit *Not insured by any federal government agency.
